I’ll Take It

“The first publicly available type delivery service, and the first type delivery service to serve WOFF files, Kernest seems always to be in the game. For what it’s worth, Kernest was not well received by Andy Clarke. What malarkey.” – Tim Brown, NiceWebType

When you do find the font you want though, using it couldn’t be simpler….No hassle, and the additional payload is minimal. This is a much cleaner and more user-friendly method.

Thanks for the great write-up. And yes, a redesign of the font-selection interface is in the works.

Jason Speaking about Kernest

” I found Kernest’s interface a little slow and difficult to navigate, but once my fonts were chosen, it was a breeze to deploy them.” – Jason Cranford Teague

Thanks Jason – ‘breeze to deploy’ was the goal of this initial release.

To date – far more attention has been paid to the Font Serving engine than the Font Directory side of Kernest. I’ve got some fantastic ideas on how to improve the Font Directory side.

I’d like to have the pricing structure map to how fonts are licensed today – which is commonly on a price-per-project basis. If a ‘domain’ is considered a large ‘project’, it feels appropriate.

Your thoughts?

Richard Fink’s Initial Thoughts on Kernest

“Unlike the much-publicized TypeKit, Van Buren has obviously been working steadily, quietly, and has something impressive to show for it. Right now. Today. A Web Font Service, the real thing.” – Richard Fink, ReadableWeb.com

He’s also added some screenshots from the preview site, like this one:

Seeing symbol and dingbat fonts in the service continues to make me smile.
